Articles & Tips

One of the reasons Jill Dunford wrote Teach Me Mommy was to combine a lot of great teaching ideas into one location. But like any mother and teacher, she can't stop thinking about ways to instruct children. And as more and more people find out about this great learning guide, they have ideas they want to share with the other moms and teachers who are using the book. The following articles are anecdotes and examples, ways and means Jill and others have applied and extended the principles of Teach Me Mommy to raising children.

 TIMELY TIPS

  SUMMER PICNIC TIPS

  • Save unused packets of salt, pepper, ketchup, mayonnaise, etc. that you get from fast food restaurants. They're perfect for picnics.
  • A hamper or large plastic storage box can keep your supplies ready at a moment's notice: paper plates, napkins, cups, wipes, the packets mentioned above, a wipeable table cloth, plastic garbage bag, sharp knife, cooking equipment if you're grilling, etc. Just add the food and you're ready to go.
  • Fill clean empty milk or juice cartons about ¾ full of water and freeze. They keep the perishables cold much better than individual ice cubes. As the water melts in the carton, it can be used for drinks at the picnic site.
  • A shower curtain makes a great plastic tablecloth or ground cloth if you're sitting on the grass. They're inexpensive, can be thrown in the washer when you return, and come in many bright colors.

  ORGANIZING BOOKS

To make the organization of all those books brought home from the library a little easier, designate a particular shelf on a bookcase, a large basket, or a box somewhere in the house for library books. That way, you don't "lose them," and it's easier gathering them to return to the library—the container can be reloaded with a new set for the coming week.
